Coming Home

My friend described my past summer as a “vision quest,” a Native American tradition of sending out the youth in pursuit of some sort of revelation. While somewhat accurate, it’s missing the key element, which is that God aspect that never seems to let me go (thank God): I went in search of myself, but I came back with a revelation of God. It’s interesting, but the more I look to myself and look for myself and try to find the meaning of my life and how I relate to people, the more depressing life becomes. Perhaps I’m alone in this, but I see the gifts I have, I see the opportunities I’ve been given, yet I cannot help but feel like a constant failure. My lack of wisdom in certain situations, the evil that I always fall back into for the sake of not having to fight against it anymore, are only a few of the many elements that I see in myself that make me hopeless. I can’t do it, and what’s worse, I can’t do it without God.

The One Story I Cannot Tell

My dear friend,

You know how much I love to share my stories with you, and you know if something this big has happened, something so beautiful that it can only be from God, you know how much I’d want you to know about it too. But this time, I’m sorry, but this is one story I cannot tell. You see, I’m afraid that if I speak it out loud, it’ll lose it’s beauty.   Continue reading

What is Important?

Well, that depends: what remains standing when everything else falls apart?

It’s a question I have been asking myself, and asking God, since last Saturday – April 6th. This past Saturday was the third anniversary of my father’s death. And I had completely forgotten.  Continue reading

Presence vs. Presents

… Do not seek Me primarily for what I can give you. Remember that I, the Giver, am infinitely greater than any gift I might impart to you. Though I delight in blessing My children, I am deeply grieved when My blessings become idols in their hearts. Anything can be an idol if it distracts you from Me as your First Love. When I am the ultimate Desire of our heart, you are safe from the danger of idolatry. As you wait in My Presence, enjoy the greatest gift of all: Christ in you, the hope of Glory!

-Romans 12:2; Revelation 2:4; Colossians 1:27 (Jesus Calling, March 27)

I know this is something that a lot of Christians struggle with, the idea of God as Himself, His presence, versus being a spiritual vending machine: put good works in, get blessings out.  Continue reading

Why Me?

“Past, present, future,” he said, in his typical cryptic “yoda” fashion. I wasn’t in a mind to take that kind of thing from him, not right then. Usually it gave me a mental exercise, along the lines of, “Whatever could he mean by that?” But yesterday night, I just wasn’t having it.

“What’s that supposed to mean??”

“What do you mean what’s that supposed to mean?”

“What I just said!”

“Woah now, you actually sound mad!” Upon inspection it seemed that I was, and that’s not normal. Not with him.

After an exasperated sigh I continued to seethe, trying to calm myself down. He laughed at my efforts.

Then he remarked thoughtfully, “Don’t you know what you’re asking?”

“No!” I yelled, taking advantage of the opportunity to set his head straight, or at least to make myself clear. “I’m just trying to figure it out. I’ve talked to God about it, sure, but with Him I don’t feel as though I need to be completely coherent.” He nodded with a smile in understanding. “I’ve never really tried to talk it out with someone. I’m just… confused.”

“You’re wondering why God called you.” Continue reading

“I am with you”

An entry in my devotional that met me where I was, and brought me to the light. Jesus’ words spoke to my heart, and lifted me from the darkness. This is what I would like to share with you.

I AM WITH YOU. These four words are like a safety net, protecting you from falling into despair. Because you are human, you will always have ups and downs in your life experience. But the promise of My Presence limits how far down you can go. Sometimes you may feel as if you are in free fall, when people or things you had counted on let you down. yet as soon as you remember that I am with you, your perspective changes radically. Instead of bemoaning your circumstances, you can look to Me for help. You recall that not only am I with you, I am holding you by your right hand. I guide you with My counsel, and afterward I will take you into Glory. This is exactly the perspective you need: the reassurance of My Presence, and the glorious hope of heaven.

~Zephaniah 3:17; Psalm 73:23-26

A Slice of Humble Pie

“Rejection is a good thing – it reminds us we’re not perfect.” A friend of mine said that to me only hours before I received a rejection that I was convinced would never happen. When I remembered that, I smiled sadly: yet another lesson in humility where I thought pride wasn’t an issue.

Jesus Feeds the 5000 – A Journey (Pt. 1)

It was one of the passages we discussed during the Bible study I attended one night. A familiar story, one that I could probably recite in my sleep. I thought it curious that our leader would choose what I thought of as “children’s stories,” but then she addressed them in a very interesting light. “Meditate on the passage, imagining as though you were there in the story,” she said. “Whether you relate more with Jesus, or the disciples, or anyone else mentioned, try to see what they were seeing. Let the Spirit show you something new.” Now, I’m quite an imaginative person, so I gladly welcomed the imagination exercise. What I didn’t expect was to receive a revelation that would change the way I saw the story forever, and it’s one that I would like to share with you.

Called – A Testimony, A Poem

(This is meant as spoken word, but until I get the courage to actually perform it, it’ll remain in text. Perhaps one day, but it’s something I’d like to share.)

Father God, I stand before you in the midst of my inadequacy,
A breathing contradiction, the battle within me the only consistency.
I know You have paid the price for me, I know I am free,
Yet still I sit with these chains draped over me. Continue reading
